new customs #1, good books, and family meeting

As we prepare to transition into our new worship space and time, there are a handful of new “customs” I’m looking forward to us leaning into.
New custom #1: Sunday lunch.
Now, those of us who call Life home are no strangers to the joy of breaking bread together. Our second-ever meeting in the Morey living room was a phenomenal meal, and many more such meals over the years have launched Life’s potlucks to near legend status, to say nothing of the Taco Lady, 6ft burritos, etc. And many Lifers are in the habit of going out to eat with friends after worship on Sunday nights. This has been a great way to build friendships and reach out to those who are visiting or newer to the community.
But meeting in the morning opens the opportunity to ramp this up. For a lot of people, grabbing food after Sunday evening worship is just not feasible. Kids need to go to bed, alarms need to be set for the wee hours, etc. Lunch opens up new possibilities for both outreach to those friends we bring to Life, and for fellowship with those we already know and love.
Here is what I’d like to see become the new normal at Life:
- Random acts of hospitality. Meet someone on a Sunday morning, invite them to go to lunch with you and friends. Or as you invite people to come with you to church, make lunch part of the invite.
- Open homes. If you like having people over, consider making Sunday lunch part of your ministry to others.
- The occasional lunch on-site. Appropriately, our first Sunday (Feb 5) in the new building will end with a meal (email deannefunk@gmail.com to sign up to bring something).
- And be advised that In and Out is opening a new location right down the street. A clear sign of God’s favor if ever there was one . . .
Sharing meals like this is not just something we do after worship – it is part of worship.
Other items of note:
Many of you know that one of the primary ways I connect with God is by reading good books. If you are a fellow book worm, wanting to beef up your what-to-read-this-year list, or are just curious, click here for my annual list.
Our annual family business meeting is happening during/after worship on Jan 29, which will also be our last night in our current location. We’ll be talking about where God is leading us in 2012, welcoming a bunch of wonderful new members, a couple of new vision teamers, and a new budget (for those who would like to go through Life’s 2012 budget in greater detail, there will be a meeting upstairs this Sunday immediately following worship).
Lord bless you friends, and we’ll look forward to being with you this weekend –
Tim
